SAATÇİ AHMET EFENDİ
Hafızlığı da vardı ama saatçi olarak bilinmeyi tercih ederdi. Ta küçüklüğünden beri hafız olarak yetiştirilmiş, hıfzını da başarıyla tamamlamıştı. Hatta camilerde, evlerde, mevlitlerde aranan bir insan olmuştu; bunda o zamanlarda hafızların veya Kur’an okuyanların pek az olmasının da bir payı vardı elbette. Lakin kendini ne kadar zorlarsa zorlasın, neticede kendi benzerlerinin sıradan takipçisi olmaktan öteye geçemiyordu. Zaten yeteneği de oldukça sınırlıydı; kuvvetli bir sesi yoktu, bir seviyeden sonra sesi çatallanıyordu. Tam bir hafızdı ama bazen takılıyordu, onun için tekrar çalışmak zorunda kalıyor; Ramazanlarda hatimle namaz kıldırmaktan kaçınıyordu. Diğer bazı hafızlar öyle miydi ya? Filan surenin şu ayetinden başla deseler bülbül gibi şakımaya başlıyorlar, şu ayet nerede diye bir suale muhatap olsalar hemen suresini, numarasını söyleyiveriyorlardı. Onda ise bu derecede hafıza kuvveti yoktu, normal bir hafızdı. Ahmet Efendiyse ailenin maddi sıkıntılarından babasının dükkânında zaman zaman çalışmaya mecbur kalmış, arkadaşları gibi hocaya çok düzenli gidememişti.
Babası da lokantacıydı, devrin zor şartları altında çoluk çocuğunu geçindirmeye çalışan bir esnaftı, ilmi yoktu ama hocaları, kitapları severdi; biricik oğlunun hafız olması onu ne kadar sevindirmişti, hâlbuki oğlunu okuturken hep borçluydu, hep kendinden kısmıştı. Ahmet Efendi, çok zor bir zamanda tamamlamıştı hıfzını. Tek parti devriydi. Değil Kur’an okumak ve evde Kur’an bulundurmak bile büyük tehlikeydi. Jandarma bir arama yapsa ve bir Kura’an ya da Kur’an yazısıyla yazılmış bir kitap bulsa onların sahibi kendini hapiste bulurdu. Buna rağmen rahmetli babası onu okutmaktan çekinmemişti. Kasabanın ücra köşesindeki bir evin bir köşesinde ama her türlü tedbirin sıkı sıkıya alındığı bir yerde ders veren Muhyiddin Efendi’nin hocalığında üç buçuk sene hafızlık yapmıştı.
Hocası da cesur ama temkinli bir adamdı. Birkaç defa Kur’an öğretmekten ötürü tevkif edilmesine rağmen akıllıca manevraları ile kurtulmuş, yaşlılığına değin hafız yetiştirebilmişti. Azimli, kararlı ve görüş sahibi, muhterem bir adamdı hocası. Sertti ama şiddetli değildi. Talebesini sadece derslerde değil hayatta da takip eder, öğüt ve telkinlerini devam ettirirdi. Sadece ders öğretmekle kalmaz; hikâyeler, kıssalar ve nükteler vasıtasıyla derin ve kuvvetli nasihatler verir, talebesinin ahlaken yetişmesini temine çalışırdı. Zor şartlardan yılmazdı ama her zaman mustarip bir adam görüntüsü verirdi. Kendi talebeliği ile devrini mukayese eder, talebelerinin bu derecede zor şartlar altında okumalarına üzülürdü. Kendileri de elbet zorluklarla okumuşlardı ama baskı yoktu, şiddet yoktu, yakalanma korkusu yoktu. Talebe okutmakta karşılaştığı büyük güçlükler onu hizmetten alıkoymamıştı, lakin hüzün ve keder onu yıpratmış, erken ihtiyarlatmıştı. Kimseye muhtaç olmamasına rağmen yaşlılığında arayanı soranı kalmamıştı, bir köşede ölümü bekler bir halde kalmıştı. Ahmet Efendi, hocasını vefatına kadar ziyarete devam etmiş, hediyelerle gönlünü almış, bu vefakârlığıyla çok duasını almıştı. “Hafızlarımın arasında bir sen varsın” iltifatını, taltifi her zaman dirhem dirhem vermeyi âdet edinmiş eski terbiyenin bu muhterem temsilcisinden almayı başarmıştı. Lakin hocasının durumuna üzülürdü; düşkünlüğüne, alilliğine acırdı. Tespihçiliğe başlamıştı hocası, yaşlılıkta hem vakit geçirmek hem de eşe dosta hediye etmek için… Maddi bir beklentisi yoktu; babasından kalan bağ bahçelerinin geliriyle bir şekilde geçiniyordu; yarıcılar hep aldatıyorlardı onu gerçi, o da bunu biliyordu ama… Lakin o tespihlerin çoğu sayı tutmaz, tanelerin kimi büyük kimi küçük olur, renkler karışık olur, böylece garip tespihler çıkardı ortaya. Bir tane de kendisinde vardı, Ahmet Efendinin. Islah etmiş, hatalarını düzeltmiş, yeni bir ipe dizerek evde namaz kılarken kullandığı cüppesinin cebine koymuş, namazlardan sonra tesbihatı onunla yapıyordu. Böylece hatırlamaya vesile oluyor, hocasına bu vesileyle fatihalar gönderiyordu.

Ahmet Efendi, kasabanın değişik camilerinde emekliliğine kadar uzun yıllar hizmet vermişti. Her zaman vaktinde camide olmuş, vazifesini hiç aksatmamış, cemaatine de her konuda faydalı olmaya çalışmıştı. Bilhassa çocuklarla hep ilgilenmiş, onları namaza ve Kur’ana teşvik etmişti, hediyeler bile aldığı olurdu onlara, maaşının kıt kanaat yetmesine rağmen. Yazın da her müracaat edene Kur’an öğretmeye gayret ederdi. Bütün bunlara rağmen cemaatinden bazıları onu beğenmez, “sesi çatallı, fazla mülayim, falan caminin hocası öyle mi ya” diye arkasından konuşurlardı. Bunlar kulağına geldiğinde kızmazdı Ahmet Efendi. Bu dedikodular onu kendisine kızdırır, kendisiyle cebelleştirirdi. Yetersizliklerini aşmaya her zaman gayret göstermişti; sesini düzeltmek için senelerce çiğ yumurta içmiş, devamlı tekrar ederek hıfzını yenilemiş, bazı cemiyet işleriyle meşgul olarak kendisini yetiştirmeye de gayret etmişti. Yine de beğenmezlerdi. Gerçi kendini beğendirmek gibi özel bir gayreti yoktu ama ne de olsa insandı.
Saatçilik öyle miydi ya… Zamanın bir nevi sahibi oluyordu insan. Âdemoğlunun en önemli ihtiyaçlarından birinin hâkimi. Saatçi buydu işte. Zamanın doktoru, saatlerin babası, insanların zaman ayarcısı. İbadetlerin tam ve zamanında yapılmasını sağlayan muvakkit. İşini beğenirdi Ahmet Efendi. Severdi, saatlerle meşgul olmaktan hoşnut olurdu. Cemiyete hakiki hizmeti saatçilikle verdiğini düşünür, bu yüzden saatçi olarak anılmak isterdi.
Saatçiliği öğrenmesi de bir garip vesileyle olmuştu. Askerde bulunduğu sıralarda, bölüğünün bulunduğu küçük bir Anadolu şehrinde zaman zaman çıktığı çarşı izinlerinde, bir camide karşılaştığı bir saatçi onun munis halini ve güzel tavırlarını beğenmiş, dindar olmasından dolayı, biraz haylaz olan oğluna nasihat etmesini istemişti. Bunu üzerine delikanlılık çağında olan çocukla arkadaşlık etmişti. Zaten konuşacak birilerine ihtiyacı vardı. Asker arkadaşları arasından kafa dengi birisi çıkmamış, yalnız kalmıştı. Yine o mahdut cumartesi-Pazar çarşı izinlerinde çocukla buluşup arkadaşlık etmişler, şehri gezip tozmuşlar, hatta sinemaya bile gitmişlerdi. Çocuk aslında iyiydi zaten. Delikanlılık çağı onun için kısa bir döneme has bir nevi rüzgâr gibiydi. Babasının telaşı boşunaydı. Yine de babası çocuğunun kısa bir zamanda düzelivermesinden çokça memnun olmuştu. Tabii ki bunda bir payı vardı Ahmet Efendi’nin. Dolaylı yoldan dikkatlice konuşmaları, iyi niyetli davranışları çocuğun ruhuna nüfuz eden hasbi hareketleri, delikanlıyı etkilemişti. Bunu üzerine “oğlum, ben de sana mesleğimi, hem de en ince sırlarına vakıf olabilecek bir şekilde öğreteceğim” demiş, askerliğin bitiminde babasından izin alan Ahmet Efendi’yi kısa sürede saatçilikte yetiştirmişti. Doğrusu öğrenci de bu hususta oldukça yetenekliydi, hemen her şeyi çarçabuk kavrayıveriyor, bir daha da unutmuyordu. Bu sırada ustasının evinde kalıyor, bütün gün dükkânda bıkmadan usanmadan çalışıyordu. Temiz ve tertipliydi. Sabahleyin dükkânı önce o açar, her yeri temizler, ocağa çayı koyduktan sonra aletleri gözden geçirir, dünden kalan bir işi varsa hemen ona koyulurdu. Ustası geldiğinde her şeyi hazır ve yerli yerinde bulurdu. Kısa bir zamanda her şeyi öğrenecek diyordu. Onu bilhassa duvar saatlerinin tamirinde yetiştirmiş, ama her konuda kendi başına yürüyebilecek bir seviyeye getirmişti. “Tamam, oğlum” dedi günün birinde, “artık bundan sonra sen de bir saatçisin.” Ona bir takım alet hediye etti; hanımına bir de armağan çıkını hazırlattı, cebine de parasını koyup hayır dualarla memleketine yolcu etti.
Memleketine dönünce babası Diyanet’te bir vazife almasında ısrar etti. “Saatçiliği de bu arada yürütürsün” diyordu. “Okuttum hafız ettim, sonra unutursan vebal benim omuzlarıma biner” diye iknaya çalışıyordu. Hâlbuki askerdeyken, saatçilik öğrenirken de ve hatta babasının dükkânında çalışırken de Ahmet Efendi, her gün muntazam Kur’anını okumuş, eksik yerlerini gidermeye sürekli gayret etmişti. Bunca zamanda bunca gayretlerle bir sürü sıkıntı ve güçlüklere katlanarak öğrendiği Kitabını terk edecek değildi, ama mademki babası öyle istiyordu, Diyanet’e başvurdu, imtihanı kazandı ve kendi kasabasında önce küçük bir mescitte vazifeye başladı. Saatçilik yapıp yapamayacağını bilmiyordu, ümidi bir nevi kaybolmuştu.
Vazifeye başladıktan bir süre sonra evlendi Ahmet Efendi. Senesinde bir oğlu oldu. Ailenin yüzünü bir sevinç kaplamıştı. Saadetler içerisinde bir süre kendisini rahat hissettiyse de babasının vefatı ailenin yükünü Ahmet Efendi’nin üzerine bindirmişti. Babasından bir şey kalmamış, lisede okuyan kardeşinin masraflarını temin etmek ona düşmüştü. Kendi çoluk çocuğunu babası hayattayken rahatça geçindirebiliyordu. Fakat bu ani vefat onu ve tüm aileyi sarsmıştı. Bu arada bir oğlu daha oldu. Yükü ve sıkıntısı artmıştı ama bu bebek ona sanatını yeniden kazandırdı. Bir dostundan aldığı borçla bir saatçi dükkânı açtı ve kısa bir sürede borcunu da ödedi, ailesini de rahatça geçindirmeye başladı. Onun bu yönü kasabalıyı da iyice şaşırtmıştı, kimi hayret edip gıptayla “aferin” diyor kimisi de “bu yavaş adam ne zaman ve nasıl öğrenmiş bu sanatı” diyerek onu küçümsüyordu. Mesleki mahareti ve güzel ahlakı sayesinde kısa bir zamanda civar köyler ve kasabalardan bile müşteriler edinmişti.
Anacığını kaybetti bu arada. Temiz, pak, güzel anacığını. Bu vefattan sonra hayatı bir nevi yeknesaklığa dönüştü. Evi, camii, dükkânı arasında seyreden bir düzen tutturmuştu. Bu arada disiplini ve vazife bilinci sayesinde kasabanın en büyük camiine tayin olunmuş, daha büyük bir cemaate hitap eder duruma gelmiş, sorumluluğu artmıştı.
Okumayı, yani Kur’an-ı Kerim’in haricinde dini, ilmi ve fikri eserleri okumayı da severdi Ahmet Efendi. Zaten daha küçükken babası evde ahbaplarıyla toplandığında gazete dâhil olmak üzere her türden eseri ona okuttururdu; hazır bulunanlar da dinlerler ve daha sonra okunanları müzakere ederlerdi. Bu alışkanlığını zaman içinde kaybetmemiş, vakit buldukça okumuş, kendini yetiştirmişti. O da babasını âdetini devam ettirir, uzun kış gecelerinde arkadaşlarını, cemaatini toplayıp yeniden çıkmaya başlayan Sebilürreşad ve Büyük Doğu gibi dergileri ve ilmi, fikri bazı kitapları okurlar, üzerlerinde konuşurlardı.
Şairliği de vardı Ahmet Efendi’nin. Daha delikanlılığından itibaren bazı denemeleri olmuştu. Arkadaşları ve ahbapları şiirlerini beğenirlerdi. O da yeni bitirdiği bir şiirini büyük zevk içinde toplantılarda okurdu. Hele bir buçuk yaşında ölüveren kızı Vildan için yazdığı mersiyesi halk arasında bile yayılmış, okunur ve beğenilir olmuştu. Hayatının en trajik hadiselerinden biriydi kızının vefatı. İki oğlunun doğumlarından altı sene sonra dünyaya gelen kızı aileye yeni bir bahar havası estirmiş, bütün sıkıntı ve hüzünleri gidermiş, hayatı yumuşatmıştı. Aileye yeni bir bereket, yeni bir heyecan, saadet gelmişti. Zaten kız evlada çok düşkündü. Ailelerinde kız çocuk birkaç nesildir hep böyle kayboluveriyor, böylece kız çocuğa hasret gittikçe büyüyordu. Bir ablası veya kız kardeşi olmasını ne kadar arzu etmişti Ahmet Efendi.. Önce baba ve sonra annesinin vefatında derinden sarsılmış ve üzülmüştü, lakin tam sevilecek çağında yavrucağın ufulü, gözlerden öyle birdenbire öyle kayboluverişi onu kahretmiş, hatta isyanın eşiğine bile getirivermişti. Fakat bu birdenbire bir uyarıcı etkisi yaparak kendine getirmişti onu. Kızı için yazdığı mersiye de işte o an, o rücu ve dönüş anında doğuvermişti. Bu da ayrıca bir tedavi gibi olmuş, kadere rızasını güçlendirmişti.
Bundan sonra kendini iyice saatlere verdi Ahmet Efendi. İşte bu dönemden sonra tam bir saatçi oldu. Saatler onun en yakın arkadaşlarıydı artık. Her çeşit saati ayrı ayrı sever; sanki kızına gösterdiği ihtimamın aynısını hepsine sarf ederdi. Okşardı onları. En ufak eksikliklerini bile ihmal etmez, her saati pırıl pırıl eder, öyle teslim ederdi sahiplerine. Yaptığı işin karşılığını, ücretini alırdı ama asıl gayesi müşterilerinin kalbini kazanmaktı. Zaten tamirine muvaffak olduğu her saatten derin bir lezzet, yüksek bir haz alırdı. Bu, bir dereceye kadar yetiyordu ona. Lakin sanatın bir hakkı ve çoluk çocuğun da ayrı bir hakkı vardı. Müşterileri de zaten memnundular. Tamir ücretlerini seve seve verirlerdi.
Ama imtihan etmek isteyenler bile çıkardı karşısına. Saati özellikle bozup öyle getirirlerdi dükkâna. Ama saatten ve saat tamirinden ne anlardı onlar. Hassas zannedip bozdukları kısımlar, genellikle aslında tamiri en kolay olanları bulunurdu. Lakin onların o zehabını Ahmet Efendi, bile bile doğru çıkarır, kısa bir zamanda tamir ettiği saati, uzun bir aradan sonra geriye verir, aldandığını sanmalarından hoşlanır, normalden de düşük ücret alarak sahiplerini şaşkınlığa uğratırdı.

Şimdilerde Ahmet Efendi sanatını yine meslek olarak icra edemiyor. Arada sırada eşin, ahbabın, dostun saatlerini tamir ederek işinden anca uzak kalmamakla yetiniyor. Hayat ne cilvelerle doludur, kader neler çıkarır insanın karşısına. Emekliliğini doldurur doldurmaz işlemlerini yapmışları Ahmet Efendi’nin. Daha birkaç senesi olduğunu zannederken emekliğe ayrılmış olması onu şaşırtmıştı. Sonradan öğrendiğine göre, kendisini çekemeyen bir kişi yetkili makama geldiğinden beri ondan kurtulmak istiyormuş zaten. Hükümetin emekli etme politikasının gönüllü uygulayıcısı olarak Ahmet Efendi’nin emekliliğinin dolmasına kadar beklemiş, günü gelince hemen işlemlerini yaptırmıştı. Tevekkül ile karşıladı bu yeni durumunu. Ama ağrına gitmişti. Cemaatinden ve ahaliden kaçar olmuştu. Düşündü, düşündü. İki oğlu da gurbette okuyorlardı. Emekli maaşı ve saatçilik ile geçinmek mümkündü ama çocuklarının tahsil masrafı belini büküyordu. İstanbul’daki tanıdıklarına haber saldı, bir iş bulabilir miyim diye. Hem böylelikle aile de birleşmiş olacaktı. Bir arkadaşı eski bir kütüphanede yazma kitaplar yazmak üzere sözleşmeyle eleman alacağını bildirdi. Tam ona göre bir işti bu. Eskimez yazıyı zaten biliyordu. İhtiyarlık çağının gençliğinde böylece İstanbul’a göçmüş oldu Ahmet Efendi.
Saatçi dükkânını kardeşine bıraktı. Uzun yıllar yetiştirmiş, mahir bir usta yapmıştı onu. Göçmesine bir sebep de oydu. Gittikçe zorlaşan hayat şartlarının baskısıyla bir dükkândan hem o hem kendisi ailelerini nasıl geçindireceklerdi. İşe başlayıp bir de ev kiraladıktan sonra memleketindeki evini bozup eşyalarını topladı, konu komşuyla helalleşip vedalaştılar ve İstanbul’a geldiler. Bir süre sonra işine de alışmıştı Ahmet Efendi. Bazı şeyleri biraz zor öğrenmişti ama arkadaşlarının yardımıyla açıklarını kapatmıştı. Fakülteden yeni mezun olmuş gençlerin idaresi altında çalışıyor, yapılacak işleri onlardan öğreniyordu. Bu durum onun ağrına gitmiyordu, zaten kibirli bir insan değildi. Gençlerle çabucak kaynaşıp anlaştı. Çoğunu kafa dengi bulmuştu zaten. Hepsinin Ahmet Ağabeyi olup çıktı. Gençlerle beraber çalışmak ona bir nevi gençlik aşısı olmuş, yeniden bir düzen tutturmuş, yaşayıp gidiyordu.
Böylece saatçiliği bir kenarda kalmış, hatta mesai zorunluluğu ve trafikten ötürü işe gelip gidişinin uzun vakit alması, eşin dostun saatlerine bile fırsat bırakmaz olmuştu. Yine de hafta sonları saat tamir eder, gün boyunca tamirle uğraşırdı. Bu zamanlarda arada bir gözlerini kaldırır, geçmiş günlerini, dükkânını, camiini hatırlar; derinden bir iç geçirirdi. Eşini hâlâ derin bir muhabbet ve pek şefkatle seven hanımı durumu hemen anlar ’”Ne oldu efendi? Neye üzülüyorsun? Yine bir dükkânın olur inşallah” diye teselli ederdi. “İstanbul’da hem ev kirasıyla hem de dükkân kirasını vereceksin, çocuklarının masraflarıyla bir de geçineceksin güldürme insanı hatun” diye içinden geçirir, ama hanımına bir şey hissettirmez “nereden çıkardın üzüldüğümü” diye söylenir tekrar işine koyulurdu.

Bu günlerde oğullarıyla başı dertte Ahmet Efendi’nin. Kendisinin ilim tarafını tevarüs eden oğlu fakülteyi bitirmiş ama bir iş bulamamış, askere gitmek mecburiyetinde kalmıştı. Kendisinin zanaatkârlık yönünü kapan büyük oğlan ise okulu bitirince bir işe girmişti ama maaşı çok değildi. Borca girip bir bilgisayar almış, evin bir köşesine kurduğu bu alet ile gece geç vakitlere kadar çalışıyor, gecesini gündüzüne katıyordu. O garip aletin tıkır tıkır çalışması Ahmet Efendi’nin uykusunu kaçırıyor, kalkıp oğluna bir bakıyor ‘’kolay gelsin’’ diyor, onunla konuşmak istiyor ama hemen ekranın başına dönüp çalışmaya devam etmesinden ötürü cesareti kırılıyordu. Bunun üzerine abdest alıyor, namaz kılmaya, dua etmeye başlıyordu. Aslına her ikisi de muti çocuklardı. Delikanlılık devirlerinde bazı olaylar olmuştu ama bunlar kısa sürmüştü. Çocuklarının bu güzel ahlakında sevgili hanımının payı büyüktü, çocukları “babanız, babanız” diye büyütmüştü. “Babanız kızar, babanız darılır, babanız duysa ne der” diyerek çocuklarının gözünde kendisini hep büyütmüş, ailedeki merkezi yerini hep sağlamlaştırmıştı.
Meğerse büyük oğlanın derdi başkaymış. İş yerinde tanıştığı bir kızla evlenmek istiyormuş. Bilgisayarın borcunu bitirdiği halde bu kendini yiyip bitirircesine çalışması, evlenmek için para biriktirmeye yönelikmiş meğerse… İşte bu hadise hanımı tarafından kendisine aktarılınca çok korktu Ahmet Efendi. Oğlu ölecekmiş ve ebediyen onu kaybedecekmiş gibi duygulara kapıldı. Kızının vefatı sık sık rüyalarına girer oldu. Oğlan da babasının meseleden haberdar olduğunu öğrenince eve uğramaz olmuştu. Gece çok geç geliyor erkenden de geliyordu. Bilgisayarın üzerine bir kılıf geçirmişti, çalışmıyordu artık. Hanımının aktarışına göre kız aslında dindarmış, kapanmayı da kabullenmiş; iyi bir aileye mensupmuş… Ne olursa olsun acayip gelmişti Ahmet Efendi’ye; bildiğinin, gördüğünün tamamen dışındaydı. Birtakım insanların böyle flört milört ile evlendiğini gerçi işitmişti. Lakin oğullarından ummaz, hiç mi hiç beklemezdi. Hele büyük oğlundan. Kardeşi İlahiyat Fakültesine gidip dinini âlim derecesinde öğrenmişti, lakin ibadetlere devam ve ihlâsla büyük oğlan onu geçmişti. Oğul ve babanın arası açılmıştı. Göz göze gelmekten bile sakınıyorlar, aralarındaki sessizliği bozmuyorlardı. Oğlanın bu işten vazgeçeceği yoktu anlaşılan. Kavlen reddetmemişti ama kabul etmediğini de hareketlerinden oğlunun anlamasını bekliyordu. Bir gün oğluna nasihat etmeyi denedi. Bu işin usulünün böyle olmadığını, aile yuvasından kastın huzur olduğunu, bunun da alacağı hanımın ahlakıyla ilgili olduğunu ve buna benzer birçok şeyi tane tane, yavaş yavaş anlattı, başını önüne eğip hiç ses çıkarmayan oğluna. Anladı ki tesir edememişti.
Hanımı, eşi, dostu el birlik edip sonunda razı ettiler Ahmet Efendi’yi. “Bak kız da kapanacakmış zaten, ailesi de dindar, şimdiye kadar hiçbir yanlışı olmamış; hem artık bu işler böyle oluyor, göze de yasak mı var canım” diyerek bu işi ona kabul ettirip, kızı resmen istemeye razı ettiler. Babasından atasından görmediği bu işi “kerhen kabul ediyorum” diyerek kızın ailesine haber gönderilmesini istedi. Allah’ın emri peygamberin kavli ile kızı istediler. Lakin sesini çıkarmamaya devam ediyordu Ahmet Efendi.
Gelin kız çıtı pıtı, hanım hanımcık bir şeydi.
